Kissing the witch by emma donoghue6/7/2023 ![]() It resurrects a ragtag troupe of emigrants - most notably, male impersonator Annie Hindle, ‘a man’s widow and a woman’s widower’, as the tabloids called her. This play with songs, set mostly in the dressing rooms of busy vaudeville theatres all over North America, was inspired by a real same-sex wedding that took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1886. Trespasses is about faith and superstition, politics and class, sadism and love. ![]() It asks why a servant girl who fell into fits would have put the blame on an old beggarwoman – but also, more timeless questions about the clashing cultures that have to share a small island country. Set over three days in 1661, Trespasses is inspired by the judge’s own account of one of the tiny handful of witch trials that ever took place in Ireland. ![]() Kissing the Witch finds the gritty in the fantastical, and excavates magic to find what’s really going on. The first collection of plays from Booker Prize and Orange Prize finalist and author of international bestseller Room, Emma Donoghue.Ĭontains the plays Kissing the Witch, Don’t Die Wondering, Trespasses, Ladies and Gentlemen, and I Know My Own HeartĪdapted from her book of thirteen revisionist fairy tales of the same name, this play interweaves four classic plots – Beauty and the Beast, Donkeyskin, the Goose Girl, the Little Mermaid – with an invented one about a desperate girl going to a witch for help. ![]()

Is the whole book like this? What else have I missed? The Dorcas puzzle in the first book is such a tour de force, once you see it (or have it spelled out for you) it's very unsettling. Even if it's just a trick, it's an impressive and beautiful accomplishment. Wolfe certainly creates a masterful impression that there's some larger theme and story here that we're not quite seeing. On the other hand, I continue to have people point out details and connections that I had missed but which are unquestionably there in the text, clues that make me say, "Now wait a minute, maybe this trail really does lead somewhere…" Some of the most elaborate, in-depth attempts to make sense of it all - John Clute, Robert Borski - are unconvincing and seem to stray off into fan fiction. Even after my third time through the series, I'm still not sure whether tBoTNS actually coheres into something greater than a sum of its procession of strange and wonderful episodes. ![]() Descender deluxe edition vol 26/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hardly even thought anything of it in this second volume. While I was never a huge fan of the artwork, it did grow on me. Without spoilers, this volume not only brings to the climax the Tim-21/Tim-22 conflict, but it will also draw together the disparate sides of the galactic conflict into one final meeting with the Harvesters. I really enjoyed the roller coaster ride and give a nod of respect to Jeff Lemire for telling a great sci-fi story. It will serve as an ending and a beginning. Volume Two will answer quite a few questions and start a few more. The events in the 2nd volume are truly epic. Vol Two covers the events up to Issue 32 of the Comic series. The exciting and interesting sci-fi soap opera of Descender continues. ![]() ![]() ![]() Samson, Bummer, and the other dogs will have to put aside their differences and band together to rescue their humans.and themselves.
